1. On thin ice – On probation, if you make another mistake there will be problem
Ex – I am on thin ice after my behaviour at a office party.
2. Once in a blue moon – rarely, very infrequently
Ex – I only go to a cinema once in a blue moon, but when i really go i do enjoy it.
3. Out of someone’s league – too good or expensive to someone to have
Ex – My crush is extremely out of my league.
4. To play devil’s advocate – to argue the opposite just for the sake of argument
Ex – i don’t want to play devil’s advocate but are you really going out dressed like that ?
5. To play something by ear – to plan something by improvised way (instead of planning ahead) deciding what to do as the plan develops.
Ex – Instead of booking a table this weekend shall we just play it by ear ?
6. To pull someone’s leg – to playfully deceive someone.
Ex – Are you actually leaving your job or are you pulling my leg ?
7. Pull yourself together – Recover control of your emotions.
Ex – I need to pull myself and stop crying
8. To Rain on someone’s parade – to spoil something
Ex – I don’t want to rain on your parade but i think you have made a huge mistake in your thesis.
9. To rock the boat – To do or to say something that could cause a problem or disturbance
Ex – The team is getting on really well at the moment so let’s not rock the boat.
10. To save something for a rainy day – to save something (usually money) for when you need it.
Ex – i think you should save bonus for a rainy day.
11. To see eye to eye – To Agree
Ex – I really don’t see eye to eye to my grandma.
12. To shed light on something – to reveal information about or to clarify something
Ex – Please could you shed some light on your absence yesterday ?
13. To sit on the fence – to avoid making a decision or choice.
Ex – I am sitting on the fence, i really can not choose between these two adorable puppies.
14. To sit tight – Refrain from taking action or changing one’s mind
Ex – The estate agent advised us to sit tight neither buy or sell.
15. To smell a rat – to begin to suspect trickery or deception
Ex – When she passed away, investigators were called in and soon smelt a rat.
16. So far so good – used to say that something (such as a plan or project) is progressing well with no problems up to the present.
Ex – How is the new job – so far so good !
17. Someone wouldn’t be caught dead – Someone dislikes something very much.
Ex – I wouldn’t be caught dead in a dress like that.
18. Someone heart’s is in the right place – someone only has good intentions
Ex – He is very strict with his students, but his heart is in the right place.
19. Someone’s jaw drops – Someone is very surprised
Ex – When i saw him in his suit, my jaw dropped.
20. Someone’s pride and joy – a person or thing that gives someone a lot of satisfaction and happiness
Ex – Her vegetable garden is pride and joy.
21. Someone’s true colours – the king of person someone really is rather than what they appear be
Ex – I thought he was really nice but then he was rude to the waiter and showed his true colours.
22. Something rings a bell – something is familiar or that you have heard something before.
Ex – I don’t know him personally but the name rings a bell.
23. Speaks of a devil – said when a person appears just after being mentioned.
Ex – Tori is so mean, speak of a devil – she is just like my instagram post.
24. To spill the beans – give away a secret
Ex – Go on! spill the beans ! I need to know how your date went.
25. To steal someone’s thunder – To take attention or praise away from someone’s else accomplishments by outdoing them with your own.
Ex – She stole my thunder when she announced her pregnancy at my wedding!
